LEGAL REQUIREMENTS


The marriage ceremony is a serious and binding commitment between a man and a woman; and in accordance with the Australian Marriage Act (1961), the 'Notice of Intended Marriage' form should be completed no later than one calendar month and one day prior to the date of the marriage.


To marry, you must be over the age of 18 years, not in a prohibited relationship and not already legally married.


If you are 16 to 18 years of age you must obtain written permission from parents or legal guardians, plus you must obtain authorisation from a judge or magistrate.


For identification and proof of age each of you will need to provide the following original papers (not copies or scans)
 

Birth certificate if born in Australia


Overseas birth certificate  and/or passport, if applicable


Divorce papers if either party has been married before


Death certificate if either party has had a husband or wife who is deceased


If any documents are in a foreign language an official translation into English will be required


At your wedding you are required to have two witnesses over the age of 18 years.
